Additionally, with an ERA Plus Licence, these recordings can be accessed online by students and staff, whether they are on University premises, at home, or elsewhere within the UK.

What Licensees Can Record

The ERA licence permits the recording of broadcasts intended for non-commercial educational use. A 'broadcast' is defined as a transmission that is not encrypted or encoded and is intended for general reception by the public. This includes scheduled free-to-air broadcasts on:

  • BBC television and radio
  • ITV Network services (including ITV2 and ITV3)
  • Channel Four and E4
  • Five television
  • S4C
  • Other licensed broadcast services, covering both radio and television.

ERA label requirements

All recordings or copies must be clearly labelled with the following details:

  • Date of the recording
  • Name of the broadcaster
  • Programme title
  • The statement: "This recording is to be used only for educational and non-commercial purposes under the terms of the ERA Licence."
